Sam is a Tokyo-based documentary filmmaker, editor and cinematographer whose work is deeply inspired by his two lifelong passions: music and nature. He began his career shooting music videos for friends’ bands in Oxford, where he quickly developed a distinctive eye for unexpected angles and visual storytelling. After four years of working solo, he left his job to freelance full-time—and never looked back.

In 2016, Sam moved to Japan, immersing himself in the language and culture while expanding his creative scope. His work spans arts, music, sport, and the natural world, often exploring the spaces where human expression and environment intersect. From documenting underground dance scenes across Japan and profiling breakdancers, to capturing remote sake breweries deep in the countryside or filming large-scale digital art installations, Sam is driven by strong visual coverage in service of compelling stories.

With over ten years of freelance experience, he is equally comfortable working independently, as part of a small crew, or within larger commercial productions. His work has been featured by major international broadcasters and platforms including Netflix, Apple TV, NBC (US), BBC (UK), and Three Now (NZ). His directing work for Resident Advisor won the Digiday European Marketing & Advertising Award in 2019 for Best Branded Content Series. In October 2023, he shot Mirador for NHK with renowned Japanese beatboxer Show-go, produced and broadcast in 8K, and shot the second episode in 2026 in Amami.

Sam owns a Canon C500 Mark II, C50 and DJI Mavic 3 Cine package and regularly works with RED, ARRI, and Sony cinema systems. He holds JLPT N3 Japanese and is (slowly but steadily) working toward N2.
